The History of Our Mission

Setting Goals

In October 1982, eight caregivers attended the first Alzheimer’s Family Support Group in Tyler. The goal of this founding group was to

  • provide support and information to caregivers
  • educate the public about the effects of dementia on persons living with the disease and their caregivers
  • support research

Focusing Resources

Twenty years later, in October of 2002, the group received its 501(c)3 designation and began operating as the Alzheimer’s Alliance of Northeast Texas, Inc. serving 16 counties in East Texas.

Following a thorough review of our services and impact across East Texas, the board decided to focus our resources to support the local community of our Tyler-based headquarters and surrounding county.

Effective January 1, 2009 the corporation began legally doing business as the Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County.

Expanding Impact

After over 40 years of service, the Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County has developed into a unique organization that provides life-changing support for people in Smith County living with dementia and those who care for them.

Our goal is to continue to expand to meet the needs of the growing aging population in Smith County and the subsequent anticipated increase of Alzheimer’s and other dementia in our community.
